The Two Cultures<\/span>\u00a0is the title of the first part of an influential 1959\u00a0<\/span>Rede Lecture<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>British<\/a><\/span>\u00a0scientist and novelist\u00a0<\/span>C. P. Snow<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>[1]<\/a><\/span>[2]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Its thesis was that “the intellectual life of the whole of western society”\u00a0<\/span>was split into the titular two cultures\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 namely the\u00a0<\/span>sciences<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>humanities<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 and that this was a major hindrance to solving the world’s problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Snow’s position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:<\/span><\/p>\n
