The Two Cultures<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Two Cultures<\/span>\u00a0is the title of the first part of an influential 1959<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rede Lecture<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>British<\/a><\/span>\u00a0scientist and novelist<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>C. P. Snow<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>[1]<\/a><\/span>[2]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Its thesis was that “the intellectual life of the whole of western society” was split into the titular two cultures \u2014 namely the<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>sciences<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>humanities<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 and that this was a major hindrance to solving the world’s problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Snow’s position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:<\/span><\/p>\n

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Second Law of Thermodynamics<\/a><\/span>. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of:\u00a0<\/span>Have you read a work of<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Shakespeare<\/a><\/span>\u2019s?<\/span>[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question \u2014 such as, What do you mean by<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>mass<\/a><\/span>, or<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>acceleration<\/a><\/span>, which is the scientific equivalent of saying,\u00a0<\/span>Can you read?<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>physics<\/a><\/span>\u00a0goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>western world<\/a><\/span>\u00a0have about as much insight into it as their<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>neolithic<\/a><\/span>\u00a0ancestors would have had.<\/span>[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
