The\u00a0<\/span>2011 Norway attacks<\/span>\u00a0were two sequential<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>lone wolf<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>terrorist<\/a><\/span>\u00a0attacks against the government, the civilian population and a<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Workers’ Youth League (AUF)<\/a><\/span>-run summer camp in<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Norway<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on 22 July 2011, claiming a total of 77 lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first was a<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>car bomb<\/a><\/span>\u00a0explosion in Oslo within<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Regjeringskvartalet<\/a><\/span>, the executive government quarter of Norway, at 15:25:22 (<\/span>CEST<\/a><\/span>).<\/span>[1]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0The bomb was made from a mixture of<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>fertiliser and fuel oil<\/a><\/span>[11]<\/a><\/span>[12]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and placed in the back of a car.<\/span>[13]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0The car was placed in front of the office of<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Prime Minister<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Jens Stoltenberg<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and other government buildings.<\/span>[14]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0The explosion killed eight people and injured at least 209 people, twelve of them seriously.<\/span>[8]<\/a><\/span>[9]<\/a><\/span>[10]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The second attack occurred less than two hours later at a summer camp on the island of<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Ut\u00f8ya<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Tyrifjorden<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Buskerud<\/a><\/span>. The camp was organized by the AUF, the youth division of the ruling Norwegian<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Labour Party (AP)<\/a><\/span>. A gunman dressed in a homemade police uniform and showing false identification<\/span>[15]<\/a><\/span>[16]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0gained access to the island and subsequently opened fire at the participants, killing 69 of them,<\/span>[5]<\/a><\/span>[6]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and injuring at least 110, 55 of them seriously;<\/span>[9]<\/a><\/span>[10]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the 69th victim died in a hospital two days after the massacre.<\/span>[7]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Among the dead were personal friends of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and the stepbrother of Norway’s crown princess<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Mette-Marit<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>[17]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
